Free Visual Studio and TFS training?
S.A. Architect will be offering FREE training covering Visual Studio and TFS in both 2008 and 2010 versions! This will be done in real life, so you will need to travel to somewhere in Johannesburg and so to figure out where, all you need to is click Yes on the S.A. Architect home page. Once some numbers have been worked out a venue can be found and it can be arranged!
The only catch is you will need to give up a Saturday for this, and myself and fellow Team System MVP, Zayd Kara, will be there to help or annoy you ;)
Most Valuable Indian
So yesterday I posted about myself getting the MVP award, well today it got better as my friend, co-worker, fellow VSTS Ranger and S.A. Architect lead: Zayd Kara has also been awarded a MVP for his work with Team System! Congratulations Zayd!
And the award goes to...

With the count down clock at T-10 days to my sabbatical trip an email popped into my mail box… it was an email from Microsoft congratulating me on getting the MVP (Most Valuable Professional) award for my work with Team System!
What is this MVP Award?
The Microsoft MVP Award is an annual award that recognizes exceptional technology community leaders worldwide who actively share their high quality, real world expertise with users and Microsoft… With fewer than 5,000 awardees worldwide, Microsoft MVPs represent a highly select group of experts. MVPs share a deep commitment to community and a willingness to help others. They represent the diversity of today’s technical communities. MVPs are present in over 90 countries, spanning more than 30 languages, and over 90 Microsoft technologies. MVPs share a passion for technology, a willingness to help others, and a commitment to community. These are the qualities that make MVPs exceptional community leaders. MVPs’ efforts enhance people’s lives and contribute to our industry’s success in many ways. By sharing their knowledge and experiences, and providing objective feedback, they help people solve problems and discover new capabilities every day. MVPs are technology’s best and brightest…
Richard Kaplin, Microsoft Corporate Vice President
So this is a great honour for me to be welcomed into a group of people who I look up to and respect :) You can see my new MVP profile up at https://mvp.support.microsoft.com/profile/Robert.MacLean

S.A. Architect Stats
One of the best advantages of switching WCMS (Web Content Management System) is that I could finally switch to using Google Analytics for the statistics of the site which gives a insane amount of information for the site now. Below are some reports of the status on the site. Interesting notes:
VSTS Rangers - Using PowerShell for Automation - Part II: Using the right tool for the job
PowerShell is magically powerful - besides the beautiful syntax and the commandlets there is the ability to invoke .NET code which can lead you down a horrible path of trying to do the super solution by using these, writing a few (hundred) lines of code and ignoring some old school (read: DOS) ways of solving a problem. This is similar to the case of when you only have a hammer everything is a nail - except this is the alpha developer (as in alpha male) version where you have 50 tools but 1 is newer and shiner so that is the tool you just have to use.
So with the VSTS Rangers virtualisation project we are creating a VM which is not meant for production (in fact I think I need to create a special bright pink or green wallpaper for it which has that written over it), and so we want to make it super easy for connections and the users of this VM. So one example of where the PowerShell version of the command and the DOS version is so much easier is allowing all connections in via the firewall.
Two days in and what's been happening?
Two days into the new S.A. Architect site and what's been happening?
- Added Willie Roberts to the community leads page - please blame me for forgetting to have him there in the first place.
- Got our first hosted blogger - Bramzer! Very keen to see what content he provides.
- Profile images are disabled - we having a technical issue with them which I hope to fix in the next week.
- Seeing more traffic than usual for a weekend on the site, which is in part due to the mails and so on, but more than that people are making use of things like the contact forms and so on! This is really great to see.
If you have suggestions or ideas on how to improve the site going forward, I'm looking at those two people who voted the site is average :) please let me know!
VSTS Rangers - Using PowerShell for Automation - Part I: Structure & Build

As Willy-Peter pointed out, a lot of my evenings have been filled with a type of visual cloud computing, that being PowerShell’s white text on a blue (not quiet azure) background that make me think of clouds for the purpose of automating the virtual machines that the VSTS Rangers are building.
So how are we doing this? Well there is a great team involved, it’s not just me and there are a few key scripts we are trying build which should come as no surprise it’s configuration before and after you install VSTS/VS/Required software, tailoring of the environment and installing software.

I am a community lead in this group.
